A sinkhole; or, an area with a demand for metabolic substances. For example, growing meristems are sinks for energy compounds from photosynthesis, mitochondria are oxygen sinks, and tropical rainforests or deep oceans may act as carbon sinks, absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
