Hydraulic Gradient:

The change in static head per unit of distance in a given direction. If not specified, the direction generally is understood to be that of the maximum rate of decrease in head. (2) Slope of the water table or potentiometric surface. (3) A change in the static pressure of ground water, expressed in terms of the height of water above a datum, per unit of distance in a given direction.
